{"id":10043,"date":"2020-11-20T13:45:26","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T13:45:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/?p=10043"},"modified":"2020-11-20T13:45:26","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T13:45:26","slug":"poetrykevinhiggins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casswp.eutonom.eu\/index.php\/2020\/11\/20\/poetrykevinhiggins\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry: Kevin Higgins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Presidential<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you finish reading this poem,<br \/>\nyou\u2019ll remember only<br \/>\nthe Black Forest Gateaux<br \/>\nI bought you once.<\/p>\n<p>I had no option but to vote for<br \/>\nthat tax on women\u2019s shoes<br \/>\nbut greatly admired the fight you put up against it;<br \/>\nhave kept all the press cuttings,<br \/>\nespecially those that took care not to mention me.<\/p>\n<p>As you, me, and the mirror know<br \/>\nI\u2019ve always been a great<br \/>\npro-choice advocate;<br \/>\nthat\u2019s why I spent thirty years<br \/>\nnever mentioning the issue.<\/p>\n<p>When I stop talking<br \/>\nall you\u2019ll remember is<br \/>\nthe Black Forest Gateaux<br \/>\nI bought you once.<\/p>\n<p>When I signed this bill to keep<br \/>\nwhat we did to the children secret,<br \/>\nyou, me, and my bodyguards know<br \/>\nhow vehemently I\u2019m against it.<\/p>\n<p>Trick is: what to remember<br \/>\nand what not,<br \/>\nbecause of a Black Forest Gateaux<br \/>\nI ordered you once.<\/p>\n<p>The history books are littered with<br \/>\nshit I voted for but was against<br \/>\nin the restaurant afterwards,<br \/>\nas I eyed the Black Forest Gateaux<br \/>\nand thought of you.<\/p>\n<p>And as I explain at length in my book<br \/>\n\u2018The Art of Statecraft\u2019,<br \/>\nwhen the Fourth World War descends<br \/>\nand the division bell rings,<br \/>\nI\u2019ll have no alternative but to leap up \u2013<br \/>\nwith nothing in my heart but peace \u2013<br \/>\nand, at best, abstain.<\/p>\n<p>As you\u2019re vapourised<br \/>\nyou\u2019ll remember nothing<br \/>\nbut the Black Forest Gateaux<br \/>\nI fed you once.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Presidential When you finish reading this poem, you\u2019ll remember only the Black Forest Gateaux I bought you once.
