{"id":10145,"date":"2020-12-10T18:21:12","date_gmt":"2020-12-10T18:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/?p=10145"},"modified":"2020-12-10T18:21:12","modified_gmt":"2020-12-10T18:21:12","slug":"poetry-kevin-higgins-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casswp.eutonom.eu\/index.php\/2020\/12\/10\/poetry-kevin-higgins-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry &#8211; Kevin Higgins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Our Posh Liberal Friends<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>for Susan<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whenever I show them the Future,<br \/>\nthey refuse it;<br \/>\nsay: this future has bad hair,<br \/>\nwaves its arms around too much,<br \/>\nis too Jewish,<br \/>\nor not Jewish enough,<br \/>\ntoo not-a-woman,<br \/>\nor the wrong sort of woman.<\/p>\n<p>This Future has a face that one day<br \/>\nmight raise the corporate tax rate<br \/>\nby zero point five percent,<br \/>\nand is a little too insistent<br \/>\nthat poor people be allowed live,<br \/>\ngive or take, as long as the rest of us.<br \/>\nThat sort of thing scares the people we dine with<br \/>\nnights we\u2019re not dining with you.<\/p>\n<p>I ask the barman for more finger food,<br \/>\npicture the ocean raging into the restaurant,<br \/>\nand them still sat there muttering at the chicken goujons:<br \/>\nthe people we talk to won\u2019t vote for<br \/>\nsuch extreme solutions. No one wants to live in Cuba,<br \/>\none of them says, as she\u2019s washed out the door<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I pray, when all the futures<br \/>\nthey\u2019ve turned their noses up at<br \/>\nare safely in the mud<br \/>\nand the men in boots and leather come<br \/>\nto escort us all to the Processing Centre<br \/>\nin the back of a truck<br \/>\nthat I be shot, cleanly through the skull, at the front gate,<br \/>\nso I don\u2019t suffer their groans<br \/>\nabout the quality of the gruel,<br \/>\nand how that last beating one of them got<br \/>\nwas clearly in breach of the Human Rights Act<br \/>\nand worthy of a curtly worded,<br \/>\nbut still civil, letter to The Observer.<\/p>\n<p>Feature Image: &#8216;The Temple of the Liberal Arts&#8217;, by Jacques Sablet (1749-1803).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Posh Liberal Friends for Susan Whenever I show them the Future, they refuse it; say: this future has bad hair, waves its arms around too much, is too Jewish, or not Jewish enough, too not-a-woman, or the wrong sort of woman.
