\u2018Liberals\u2019 & \u2018Death\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two words that strut confident of
\ntheir own historical inevitability.
\nEveryone in time meets them,
\nthough hopefully not both
\nringing your door bell
\nthe same day,
\nunless your name is
\nNagasaki or Vietnam;<\/p>\n

or you\u2019re the first village
\nno-one\u2019s ever heard of
\nsuccessfully abolished
\nfrom thirty thousand feet
\nby a transgender person
\npressing a button;<\/p>\n

or you\u2019re the first Somali in history
\nproudly turned into a pile of burning mince
\nby a drone designed by a woman of colour;<\/p>\n

or you\u2019re the wrong type of Australian
\nwhose computer told us the names
\nof the obliterated
\nand so can only leave prison
\nin a fair-trade white cardboard box;<\/p>\n

or you\u2019re me, delighted
\nto expire unvaccinated rather
\nthan spark a diplomatic kerfuffle
\nby sticking in my bicep
\nsomething as sinister sounding as Sputnik
\nwithout written permission from Brussels<\/p>\n

who\u2019ll surely deliver
\na keynote speaker to my grave
\nto thank my corpse for its contribution,
\nand find a plausible way of saying:
\nI\u2019m down here, getting acquainted with the snails
\nso they can be up there, polishing their idea of themselves.<\/p>\n
