{"id":11606,"date":"2021-06-16T11:41:01","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T10:41:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/?p=11606"},"modified":"2021-06-16T11:41:01","modified_gmt":"2021-06-16T10:41:01","slug":"the-literary-outsider-novel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casswp.eutonom.eu\/index.php\/2021\/06\/16\/the-literary-outsider-novel\/","title":{"rendered":"The Literary \u2018Outsider\u2019 Novel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Does an age of frenetic online activity afford time for literary masterpieces, especially Outsider Novels, transcending what is considered \u2018normal\u2019?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>He whose vision cannot cover<br \/>\nHistory\u2019s three thousand years<br \/>\nMust in outer darkness hover<br \/>\nLive within the day\u2019s frontiers.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The above stanza is from a twelve-book, poetry collection by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which was inspired by the work of fourteen century, Persian poet, Hafez.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than take the above stanza as concrete, it is worth taking it as an allegorical device, and metaphor, for what this piece sets out to champion: the work of the literary Outsider.<\/p>\n<p>With various electronic devices such as, the laptop, smartphone, iPad, and media outlets like Netflix, YouTube and other broadcasters, vying for our attention(s) \u2013 and successfully so \u2013 one must enquire into whether serious, attentive reading means anything anymore?<\/p>\n<p>Has the modern age \u2013 the tempered, electronic milieu \u2013 filtered out literary tomes?<\/p>\n<p>The very idea of \u2018The Outsider\u2019 literary work may be unnerving in what is an age of tantamount addiction to a frenetic social media; what the writer Will Self refers to as \u2018<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/oztypewriter.blogspot.com\/2019\/01\/typewriter-writer-will-self-rails.html\">bidirectional media<\/a><\/span>.\u2019 The resulting anxiety disinclines us to engage with what many may deem \u2018difficult\u2019 books, or \u2018heavy\u2019 tomes. Knocking the bottom out of the known literary universe.<\/p>\n<p>It might be said in relation to reading such books: who has aeons of uninterrupted time? In response you might say that the pandemic and lockdowns have afforded us such time. Note: no banana<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"> breads<\/span> were harmed in the writing of this piece.<\/p>\n<p>Critics sometimes venture towards difficult literary works from a canon such as that identified in Harold Bloom\u2019s tautological, yet, feverish and impassioned, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/23\/books\/review\/how-would-a-book-like-harold-blooms-western-canon-be-received-today.html\"><em>The Western Canon: The Books and School of the Ages<\/em><\/a><\/span>. These are the works of literature which ebb in from the external to the field of the Literary Arts, and which Bloom eulogises in his reviews.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11654\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11654\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11654 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/In1812.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"711\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In 1812 by the Russian artist Illarion Pryanishnikov.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>War and Peace<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who has read Tolstoy\u2019s big bangers? <em>War and Peace<\/em> anyone? History\u2019s frontiers fought over during the Napoleonic Wars, backed up with sweeping pastoral symphonies; with a charge of Russian calvary sweeping through the narrative, backed with Tchaikovsky\u2019s 1812 Overture. A silver Samovar dispensing tea in the officers\u2019 mess, the colour of unearthed rubies; tea sweetened with a cube of sugar, held between the drinker\u2019s teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Or Tolstoy\u2019s more subdued asides, with bucolic scenes of bleating lambs; and navvies sitting down in a wooded glade to consume their lunches. While out there in high summer, in the protracted Russian steppe, brown bears nosey along through tall grass to hallowed fishing grounds. With a scurry of gnats flitting at their ears.<\/p>\n<p>Or what about <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/history\/twosome_twiminds_in_casement_and_joyce\/\">Joycean<\/a><\/span> punnery \u2013 the nightbabble of Finnegans Wake \u2013 or <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Beckettian<\/span> gurglespeak?<\/p>\n<p>If the safe, go-to novel is a halfway-house where thoughts run easily along the neuron-led rafters; where sable-eared bats hang, unruffled, in the belfry; where a forgotten greenhouse with cracked panes of burping green glass dwells in the back garden of the mind, they are there serving as a concrete, model village. Known territories; safe catch-all neighbourhoods, which imbue the reading-self with tangibility.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a loss of faith in big difficult books due to less than attentive mindsets; and upon latching on this, Mediocrity Inc., sweeps in to garner easier-to-read works, which dominate book charts. What does this say about the demographics so enamoured by ease of access?<\/p>\n<p>Literary, like most paradoxes, operate through conflating, and contracting, obligations. They are in a constant state of flux. (Not helpful for the binary-seeking world of the definite article, which Mediocrity Inc., often seek out to nail to the masthead.)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11655\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11655\" style=\"width: 726px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11655 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/WilliamBlakeSatan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"726\" height=\"943\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11655\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Satan Arousing the Rebel Angels, William Blake (1808)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>Self-Made<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When all the joy of writing is being sucked out of it by marketing mentalities, then things are in a bad way; they are, rather, Miltonesque: bleak; morally obtuse. Greed has taken over the minds of formerly, we hope, reasonable people.<\/p>\n<p>Quality dissipates in such trends.<\/p>\n<p>If you put your faith in the superficial, then the meaning of actual literature \u2013 that with substance \u2013 is diluted. Worship at the golden calf and you cannot expect your palpating thirst to be quenched.<\/p>\n<p>However, the brave, writing for themselves, writer(s) will always venture out towards a different plane to help buck these acclamatory, accepted trends. The strongly composed novel could be summed up as a transference of the quotidian whereby one\u2019s will becomes the whole of the fictional law in an expansive, infinite world.<\/p>\n<p>Will Self is such a writer whose output is \u2018challenging\u2019. A writer, thinker, who goes it alone and does not yield to the Mediocrity Inc., whose plaintive, rebellious, immature cries rail that they know better, but which do not.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Outsider Novel<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The stolid mentalities who often quip, \u201cI couldn\u2019t get into it\u201d, say this, because, I believe, they are not prepared to challenge their perceptions of what the Outsider Novel means to them \u2013 an ungraspable leviathan which slips away into the listless fog.<\/p>\n<p>Five or six literary Outsider \u2018heavy\u2019 novels from the Western Literary Canon dominate and stand on the rostrum; representing the cornerstones of the literary house that encapsulate the Canon.<\/p>\n<p>Two have already been alluded to, and then there is: Laurence Sterne\u2019s <em>The Life and Opinions of Tristam Shandy, Gentleman<\/em>. Bellicose in its exposition from conception to the screaming infant through to his uncle\u2019s nose and to maturity.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first \u2018Outsider\u2019 works, it is inspired by the Rabelaisian, and inhabits the world of the absurd and the fabulist. There are long paragraphs on his Uncle\u2019s Toby\u2019s European adventures with his servant, Trim, and of course, reams of information on the prowess of his conk. It will have you amused if not bewildered at the thought of how he got away with publishing it in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>James Joyce\u2019s <em>Ulysses<\/em> is a tome in tribute to the mimesis of life, and everything which Joyce termed \u2018A shout in the street.\u2019 It takes the epic towards modernism, and a rebirth of consciousness in the early-to-mid twentieth century. There are diegetic elements to the inner monologues of the characters and the streets of Dublin. You will find an urban mammoth with its quarry caught upon its wide tusks, braced with metal struts to keep the weight of the tome from falling.<\/p>\n<p>This is no Cuneiform script to procrastinate over, it is a layered, complex novel to be discovered. Through two main characters, Leopold Bloom, and Stephen Dedalus we find an unparalleled commentary on twenty-four-hours in Dublin on June 16th, 1904. That is the plot. Simple. Yet, all-encompassing. Each copy of <em>Gravity\u2019s Rainbow<\/em> should include its own Philharmonic Orchestra to play alongside the running-hare-prose. It is about the Second World War and V Rockets and their trajectory before falling to Earth on the places where a main character is having coitus.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds mad, right? Yes. Quite, but fantastical and industrious. The prow of this literary Gridiron, in a reading, a universal, Manhattan bearing down on the sugary pap and mulch which is dished out \u2013 and is not at all, nourishing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11656\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11656\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11656 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/V2rocket.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"986\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11656\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Launch of a V-2 rocket.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>David Foster Wallace\u2019s <em>Infinite Jest<\/em> is totemic in its appreciation of Philip K. Dick\u2019s <em>The Man in the High Castle<\/em>, with a nod to Don DeLillo, and John Dos Passos\u2019s U.S.A trilogy, mainly, <em>The 42nd Parallel<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The plot of Infinite Jest is initially tertiary to Wallace\u2019s intellect and ego in fluidity. The beginning is pure vaudeville to the main circus, big-top act which is the intellect of Foster Wallace himself and the prefrontal cortex mythology, which he conspired to create and then exuded, seemingly, so effortlessly. But did Foster Wallace write a capable work? Yes he did, but it is an apostrophic set of hymnals on tennis, drug addiction and geo-political set-ups.<\/p>\n<p>I looped the meta-modernist, hyper-realist circle and went along for the ride on David Foster Wallace\u2019s encyclopaedic, metadata novel; figuring that while sedate prose is at the behest of book seller\u2019s, and publishers \u2013 means and modes of production for the masses \u2013 I thought \u2018To hell with this, give me a novel with shtick.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So, by means of reposed epidural, I plugged into Foster Wallace\u2019s acicular vein, man, and plunged the diviner right on into the other side. And it is shtick all the way.<\/p>\n<p>Foster Wallace\u2019s reliance on using nomenclature, acronyms are, well, trifling when you forget all the organisations he coins; we do know, for example, that O.N.A.N stands for Organization of North American Nations, a kind of dystopian superstate which is comprised of Mexico, the United States and Canada, and that the novel takes place during \u2018The Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment\u2019 Y.D.A.U. It opens with tennis. Wallace was a court man, he liked to court tennis and he schlongs his racket into being more often than enough in this work.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a linear prose tale as we know it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Transcendental Idealism<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These literary works fail to fall into the crushing jaws of a Western, \u2018easy\u2019 read sunset; they transcend the \u2018normal\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The oddity of the largess of such peripatetic works are still revered by committed readers. Literature, and indeed, great literature was, and is, and will forever be, a magical portal which has the power to transport consciousness into another realm. Some works, some bigger, well-crafted works exist outside the normally accepted coda of what is regarded as \u2018the novel,\u2019 and do so by existing beyond the \u2018day\u2019s frontiers\u2019, beyond paragraphs, in marginalia.<\/p>\n<p>And out there beyond the environs of \u2018known-knowns\u2019 lies the quotidian, infinite in its readiness to bypass the grassy verges of rhetoric, and up beyond ionosphere and stratosphere.<\/p>\n<p>On the y-axis of a line-graph in the evolutionary trajectory of the Outsider Novel, one could hope for, works which operate outside the perceived, \u2018normative\u2019 structures of the known, easy to digest novel. In a sense they occupy the strata of the strange, the unfamiliar; their tentacles reach into the dark nooks and cervices of the mind and bring lax grey-matter in there forward, and into pulsating, roving life.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11657\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11657\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11657 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/KantsHouse.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"905\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kant&#8217;s house in K\u00f6nigsberg (now Kaliningrad).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If one postulates further, and looks at Kant\u2019s Transcendental Idealism in <em>The Critique of Pure Reason<\/em>, it can be said that space and time are merely formal features of how we perceive objects; not things in themselves, existing independently of ourselves, or properties or relations among them.<\/p>\n<p>Objects in space and time are said to be \u2018appearances\u2019, and Kant argues that we know nothing of substance about the things in themselves, of which they are appearances. He calls this doctrine (or set of doctrines) \u2018transcendental idealism.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ignorance along the lines of myopic conjecture about a novel one has not read, is the syphilitic chancre on the body of literature \u2013 based on appearances and perceived conjecture on what a novel is, without taking the trouble to read it. This is harmful, detracting from the creativity behind such a work.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After mooching around town Lev finds a hostelry with a dizzying array of rules. Those keys are in other books; yes, books which help you with books. Isn\u2019t that what a dictionary is for, or a thesaurus for that matter?<\/p>\n<p>Take, again, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/history\/twosome_twiminds_in_casement_and_joyce\/\"><em>Finnegans Wake<\/em><\/a><\/span>, the indolent reader\u2019s worst nightmare \u2013 they start by gambolling around in search of the missing apostrophe ignoring the entr\u00e9e; and hell, they proclaim it to be the most difficult of books.<\/p>\n<p>In Christopher Marlowe\u2019s adaptation on the stories of Faust, Doctor Faustus says, \u2018Hell is just a frame of mind.\u2019 The demonic Mephistopheles in Doctor Faustus does, however, imply a similar idea by saying that losing his place in heaven gives him experience of hell wherever he is:<\/p>\n<p><em>Why this is hell, nor am I out of it.<br \/>\nThink\u2019st thou that I who saw the face of God,<br \/>\nAnd tasted the eternal joys of Heaven,<br \/>\nAm not tormented with ten thousand hells,<br \/>\nIn being depriv\u2019d of everlasting bliss?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If one was to take the evolution of the novel, we could look at Sterne, Joyce then David Foster Wallace and who knows where the creative literary genre will head next?<\/p>\n<p>To <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2019\/jul\/15\/ducks-newburyport-by-lucy-ellmann-review\"><em>Ducks, Newburyport<\/em> by Lucy Ellmann<\/a><\/span>?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the form has hit its parabolic arc, and now needs to descend for a while from its illustrious meridian.<\/p>\n<p>Break the mould &#8211; escape the insular, self-created Hell and free yourself.
