Poems in the Manner of the Devil

\n<\/em>(1933-1994)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

If you can\u2019t chew on oxtail, eat knuckles instead.
\nThe bounty of bedlam,
\nLet these crumbs be your Thanksgiving,
\nOr Last Suppers.
\nImitation is always the greatest form of flattery.
\nSee the world now through the light of wine.<\/p>\n

Do you have confidence in the morning?
\nDo you have faith in toast?
\nEach morning, do you spread marmalade
\nUnder the clouds in the sky?<\/p>\n

Here, drink this little cup of coffee.
\nTaste the bitterness brewed in countless suns
\nAnd raise your little finger, subconsciously,
\nTo honour the martyrdom of little buns.<\/p>\n

These trees that surround you,
\nWhy do there branches rise like accusatory fingers
\nHolding peaches up to the clouds?
\nWhere have all the flamingos flown?
\nInto the jaws of baboons in hell.<\/p>\n

Columns, arches\u2026 shit!
\nCommerce herself is dizzied by the sun.<\/p>\n

But know also this,
\nThat within all of this madness
\nThere is one alone who sleeps quietly
\nNestled in dreams like a bird
\nAnd she dreams of housing owls
\nWhile presiding over countless committees.<\/p>\n

Break\u00a0 Fast<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The table- cloth was a souvenir from Turkey.
\nIt had a very simple olive pattern,
\nThe kind you might find in a good caf\u00e9
\nOr restaurant where the meals were affordable.
\nThe kind you might find your hands floating over
\nStirring spoons of sugar or lifting glasses
\nAnd bottles of water and wine, picking up bread
\nAnd paper napkins or surely raising to take out
\nBank cards, in order to settle the bill.
\nIn order to settle the bill.<\/p>\n

Hardly is this last phrase out and everything,
\nThe whole panoply of artifacts,
\nSuddenly is in freefall before you,
\nLike that last joke you heard before leaving.<\/p>\n

The Familiar <\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t talk to me about storms in teacups,
\nSpeak rather about the dervish in your espresso.
\nFor your idioms and metaphor are tired,
\nAs tired as my crocs worn out from pacing
\nOver the same old living space. Here, then,
\nIs where I dwell in both the word and the poem.
\nAnd, in memory! The ontological shifts
\nWhich we must surely feel as much as the pedal
\nPressing down on the pianoforte, sustaining the SOUND
\nThe words vibrating, <\/em>each particular element,
\nEach particular word, key, shape or movement
\nGiven the proper attention it deserves.
\nSuch is modality. Yes, I would speak to you of modality,
\nAnd the ontological shifts in taking a coffee!<\/p>\n

Janus <\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>I will Putinize you, you know what I mean!
\nAs I think it say it my reptilian eyes roll over
\nBlocking out momentarily the carrion tinted sun.
\nFor, each encounter is a potential existential threat.<\/p>\n

So, I repeat it again as I move closer to you
\nPhysically and you will have the opportunity
\nOf understanding what it is I am now telling you again.
\nIf you do Not do as I ask, I will Putinize you!<\/p>\n

Putinize \u2013 a verb designated to describe
\nThe systematic annihilation of either a person,
\nA place, an animal or a thing so that the object<\/p>\n

Is no longer physically recognisable anymore.
\nJust as the city will be left in rubble, the person
\nWill no longer be recognisable instead left lifeless; like himself.<\/p>\n

Kyiv<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

After the heroic age there are only two options remaining,
\nfor hatred can only burn for so long before eventually capitulating
