First, in 1997 at the centenary of his first wireless transmissions, and also in 2007 at the centenary of his first commercial TransAtlantic wireless transmissions between Ireland and Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Both anniversaries were celebrated in Clifden, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/society-culture\/society\/culchies-an-excerpt-from-a-monk-manque\/\">Connemara<\/a><\/span>, where, in a rural site at Derrigimlagh, Marconi had built his most powerful radio station fit for the purpose.<\/p>\n<p>For the 2007 celebrations, I produced a twenty minute documentary on the life and achievements of Marconi. This was presented at the Italian Institute of Culture in the presence of a select audience, which included Marconi\u2019s daughter Princess Elettra, and her son Gugliemo.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"MARCONI&#039;S LEGACY IN IRELAND 2\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FNWiTadcFd8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The documentary entitled \u201cMarcon\u2019s Legacy in Ireland\u201d is a comprehensive, somewhat emotional profile of Marconi that engages with him as a man and father, as well as his profound scientific achievements.<\/p>\n<p>Tracing the path of his life from birth in 1874 to death in 1937, it shows how, as a young boy, he showed a passion for constructing rudimentary gadgets that drew on the filed of electromagnetism, for which he and developed a deep fascination.<\/p>\n<p>This culminated in him developing the capacity to transmit wireless messages to his brother in the perimeter of his garden in Villa Griffone, his family home near Bologna.<\/p>\n<p>That was only the beginning of a distinguished career as an inventor which led to the invention of radio, as we know it today.<\/p>\n<p>Marconi\u2019s many links with Ireland are highlighted in the documentary, including a connection with the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/society-culture\/rte-kitsch-room-to-improve\/\">RT\u00c9<\/a><\/span> grounds where Montrose House stands, which was inhabited for some time by Marconi\u2019s mother, Annie Jameson who was a member of the famous family of distillers.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, his first wife Beatrice O&#8217;Brien, was the daughter of Lord Inchiquin of Dromoland Castle, Co Clare; although he eventually, amicably divorced her to marry an Italian countess Cristina Bezzi Scali.<\/p>\n<p>His surviving daughter Princess Elettra, was the guest of honour at the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/dublin-gathering-marks-marconi-link-with-ireland-1.1208123\">presentation of the documentary at the Italian Institute of Culture in Dublin in 2007<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cI love Ireland and I know Ireland was very important to my father, I&#8217;m very grateful because Annie Jameson was the only one who believed in my father when he was very young.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1909, Marconi shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun for their \u201ccontributions to the development of wireless telegraphy\u201d (radio communications).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Frank Armstrong interviews veteran Italian journalist Concetto La Malfa to discuss his almost sixty years in Ireland, and his reflections on the War in Ukraine.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sV91EuurkT\">https:\/\/t.co\/sV91EuurkT<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BowesChay?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BowesChay<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/paddycosgrave?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@paddycosgrave<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mrpatstephenson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@mrpatstephenson<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danieleidiniph1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@danieleidiniph1<\/a> @Theislanderpods<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; CassandraVoices (@VoicesCassandra) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VoicesCassandra\/status\/1554798296639602689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 3, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Feature Image: Marconi demonstrating apparatus he used in his first long-distance radio transmissions in the 1890s.
