A Partial Epitaph<\/span><\/h1>\n

My friend, with many an article and book
\nsaved in the Cloud, would censure Robert Emmet
\nfor attitudinising in the dock<\/em>.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re most of us the beneficiaries
\nof ordered states; opinion-formers wanting
\nEmmet stopped is something that one sees.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

But this rant? Picture him in middle age,
\n<\/em>pardoned, respectable, like Thomas Moore
\n<\/em>a frequent guest at the Vice-Regal Lodge.<\/em><\/p>\n

Which to begin with doesn\u2019t get Tom Moore,
\nfriend of the stranger, dining with Zacchaeus,
\nhis harp a bow strung for the indigenous poor.<\/p>\n

I leave them to it \u2013 their vast carelessness,
\ntheir Twitter feeds correct and comfortable
\nabove the whole world\u2019s pitiable distress.<\/p>\n

Those by whom Robert Emmet was condemned
\nno doubt imagined some long-term improvement
\nin how the poor lived. Difficult for them,<\/p>\n

his edge, his relevancy; or to foretell,
\nin cabins and coffin-ships we\u2019d breathe his name;
\nour gr\u00e1 <\/em>for justice his memorial.<\/p>\n
