The weathered world<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">began to shift \u2013 a tiny alteration <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">sowing ice across the land. The shining-bellied geese <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">no longer wintered by the lough. The turf-blue river <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">waters died. An iron frost persisted, all the spring, <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">without a rain, the blooming yearly crop undone \u2013 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">in every rill and valley, sick. The factious common people <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">roared in protestation; then dwindled down, masticating <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">slowly, like a herd, on sour, curdled soup and sallow greens:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">a meal of nettle stems and charlock \u2013 the lush, <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">green-leafed, light-golden-flowered thing that grows <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">among the grass. The lark-lit summer moors<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">were blank; the meadow-birds aghast. No longer<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">having feed to give, the grieving poor death-rattled <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">in the fields, as the little cows they tended fell. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Like rotten sheep themselves, after supping <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">dead potatoes in distress, whole parishes surrendered, <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">passing out, in fever-thin delirium, to waste <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and bloody flux: a plague of desperation, day by day. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Town and city quickly filled with remnants of the living.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The census-takers floundered; swelling ditches overflowed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">To put an end to expiration, the famous bishop<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">brewed a broth: a medicine made up of milk <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">and boiling water, with a sprinkling of chalk \u2013 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">to be dispensed among the stricken, till the ague settled down.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em><strong>Feature Image: g<span class=\"mw-mmv-title\">ravestone in Coolaghmore, county Kilkenny of the Lee family, of whom three members died in 1741\u201342.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bliain an \u00c1ir \u2018The Year of Slaughter\u2019, 1740-41 Around the earth, a warring, wooden sea of brigs was bristling, a-flame; volcanic ash descending on the vacillating map.
