{"id":16961,"date":"2024-11-04T10:30:31","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T10:30:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/?p=16961"},"modified":"2024-11-04T10:30:31","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T10:30:31","slug":"poem-old-road-sign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casswp.eutonom.eu\/index.php\/2024\/11\/04\/poem-old-road-sign\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem: Old Road Sign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Old Road Sign<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sere severed plywood sign painted a modest white<br \/>\nwas nailed once to spindly posts among the water oaks.<br \/>\nNow by accident it dangles, peeling and warped.<br \/>\nUnderbrush too dense perhaps to let the fool board fall.<br \/>\nThe paint is blanched so that it fairly imitates the mists<br \/>\noft seen in bayous chockablock with oaks and black gums<br \/>\nand strands of gray-green moss on cypress limbs,<br \/>\nbut five large letters\u2014grim reminders of ill will\u2014<br \/>\nstill glare as bright as the morning when the prophet shoved<br \/>\ncheap pine posts down in the weedy grass and muck.<br \/>\nBroad feverish strokes in a harsh shade of red,<br \/>\nthey\u2019re there for homeless ducks and long-haul truckers\u2014grunts,<br \/>\ndogsbodies, quacks\u2014to read and contemplate\u2026REPEN.<br \/>\nWhile stenciled on the far edge of the broken sign,<br \/>\nthe faded letters barely legible\u2026JESU.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Image: Daniele Idini<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Old Road Sign The sere severed plywood sign painted a modest white was nailed once to spindly posts among the water oaks.
