{"id":18124,"date":"2025-09-18T12:32:27","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T11:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/?p=18124"},"modified":"2025-09-18T12:32:27","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T11:32:27","slug":"poem-maldon-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casswp.eutonom.eu\/index.php\/2025\/09\/18\/poem-maldon-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem: Maldon days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Maldon days<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>h\u0113t \u00fe\u0101 hyssa hw\u00e6ne \u00a0\u00a0 hors forl\u01e3tan,<br \/>\nfeorr \u0101f\u0233san, \u00a0\u00a0 and for\u00f0 gangan,<br \/>\nhicgan t\u014d handum, \u00a0\u00a0 and t\u014d hige g\u014ddum.<br \/>\n<\/em><em><u>The Battle of Maldon<\/u><\/em><em> (991 AD)<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Galvanized into action,\u00a0\u00a0 my companion horses neighed<br \/>\nas they galloped to the woods,\u00a0\u00a0 riderless and rudderless.<br \/>\nI turned back to my liege lord,\u00a0\u00a0 reluctant to retreat,<br \/>\nbut he waved me away from him,\u00a0\u00a0 although I was his steadfast steed<br \/>\nwho had taken him into battle boldly before\u00a0\u00a0 on many occasions.<\/p>\n<p>In the woods, we regrouped.\u00a0\u00a0 Ealdorman Byrhtnoth\u2019s proud hawk<br \/>\ncircled and swooped overhead,\u00a0\u00a0 dismissed as we had been,<br \/>\nuneasy as we were.\u00a0\u00a0 We faced out towards the riverbank,<br \/>\nwatching the fighting begin,\u00a0\u00a0 watching the ruthless invaders wreak havoc.<br \/>\nWe waited for the command to return\u00a0\u00a0 but it never came.<\/p>\n<p>I went down to the battlefield first,\u00a0\u00a0 saw my beloved ealdorman<br \/>\nbristling with spears,\u00a0\u00a0 slaughtered alongside his faithful warriors.<br \/>\nLeaving our heroes, our lords lying lifeless,\u00a0\u00a0 we trotted back to our stables,<br \/>\nknowing that our return would herald the defeat,\u00a0\u00a0 set off the lamentations<br \/>\nof the families left behind,\u00a0\u00a0 filling us all with sorrow for our great loss.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Feature Image: <span class=\"mw-mmv-title\">Battle of Maldon plains.<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maldon days h\u0113t \u00fe\u0101 hyssa hw\u00e6ne \u00a0\u00a0 hors forl\u01e3tan, feorr \u0101f\u0233san, \u00a0\u00a0 and for\u00f0 gangan, hicgan t\u014d handum, \u00a0\u00a0 and t\u014d hige g\u014ddum.
