{"id":4968,"date":"2019-09-01T00:01:09","date_gmt":"2019-08-31T23:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/?p=4968"},"modified":"2019-09-01T00:01:09","modified_gmt":"2019-08-31T23:01:09","slug":"white-woman-brown-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casswp.eutonom.eu\/index.php\/2019\/09\/01\/white-woman-brown-heart\/","title":{"rendered":"White Woman Brown Heart"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even the color of my skin belies who I really am.<br \/>\nAlways on the outside looking in . . . even with my own kin.<br \/>\nBlonde and blue-eyed born into a brown world,<br \/>\nI came to see myself through their eyes, their skin, their pain.<\/p>\n<p>White woman brown heart, I am.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t understand when sister girl said it wasn\u2019t fair<br \/>\nthat beauty and smarts went to someone like me.<br \/>\nDoors so freely opened were closed to her, I could not see.<br \/>\nBecause sister girl, she looked the same to me.<\/p>\n<p>White woman brown heart, I am.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yankee white daddy my mama said is how I came to be.<br \/>\nThey spoke his name first on that fateful sixth year.<br \/>\nMy names were nothing then and they are nothing now.<br \/>\nCause I\u2019m a nobody traveling through life on an inner dark sea.<\/p>\n<p>White woman brown heart, I am.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tethered by psychic roots running so deep that<br \/>\nit matters not where I stand on the grid of space and time.<br \/>\nI\u2019ll never understand the difference between them and me,<br \/>\nor why we only see what we see in the face of humanity.<\/p>\n<p>White woman brown heart, I am.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The soul is what bends and shapes what we\u2019re supposed to be . . .<br \/>\nAnd that <em>difficult repentance<\/em> the poet confessed long ago.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s what kept my days from always ending in that dark inner sea.<br \/>\nAnd a whispered <em>thank you<\/em> for all that ever was and ever will be.<\/p>\n<p>White woman brown heart, I am.<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5291 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/IMG_0912.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" \/>Nance Harding is a Texan living in New Orleans.
