{"id":5794,"date":"2019-11-01T16:00:27","date_gmt":"2019-11-01T16:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/?p=5794"},"modified":"2019-11-01T16:00:27","modified_gmt":"2019-11-01T16:00:27","slug":"poetry-mark-burrows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casswp.eutonom.eu\/index.php\/2019\/11\/01\/poetry-mark-burrows\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry \u2013 Mark Burrows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Resistance<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I never knew what they really felt<br \/>\nhow they survived the one world<br \/>\nwe shared across layers of fear<br \/>\nand indifference never grasped<br \/>\nthe bold grip of hatred that sears<br \/>\nthe eye and numbs the mind of<br \/>\nthe last shreds of decency never<br \/>\nexpected that the good would<br \/>\noutlast all this in a world where<br \/>\nthe question of fair isn\u2019t even<br \/>\nmentioned in the interim report<br \/>\nand could hardly imagine that<br \/>\ndespite all this greed would not<br \/>\nhave the last word in this life with<br \/>\nits unspeakable joys and woes<br \/>\nwhere the promise holds that<br \/>\nthe lost will somehow be found<br \/>\nand the last impossibly first<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Occasion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2014for Mark Jordan, with abiding gratitude <\/em><\/p>\n<p>What if beauty is a substance<br \/>\nin this world of accident and remorse,<br \/>\nfinite and particular and dispersed<br \/>\nlike the sound of larks singing<\/p>\n<p>frivolously into the morning silences,<br \/>\nregardless of audience or absence or<br \/>\nany other need? What if our single<br \/>\npurpose here is to seek what often<\/p>\n<p>falls into the crevices of disregard,<br \/>\ngratefully reaching into the stream<br \/>\nwith dry hands and parched lips?<\/p>\n<p>And what if time is but the occasion<br \/>\nfor gathering these shards of loveliness<br \/>\ninto the heart\u2019s hungry vestibule?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Work of Love\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is early, though the late night is still holding<br \/>\nthe long hems of darkness; dawn has not yet<\/p>\n<p>begun to imagine what the day might bring<br \/>\nof shadows and of light, and those I love are<\/p>\n<p>still wrapped in the mantle of their dreams.<br \/>\nBut I am sitting here with a cup of tea cradled<\/p>\n<p>in my hands as I begin to bring forth the edges<br \/>\nof a poem, drawing words and bits of song from<\/p>\n<p>the drifting play of dreams. And as I begin I\u2019ve<br \/>\nnot yet made a single mistake; no word is out<\/p>\n<p>of place on the empty page, no thought has<br \/>\nstrayed into the cravings of jealousy or rage,<\/p>\n<p>and no good deed has been undone.
