Pan\u2019s Song<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your rule has lapsed Apollo, all narrative is dead,
\nYou said true form is timeless, but they chose me instead,
\nMy pipe has no rhythm, but is easy on the ear,
\nA great tumult rise in ecstasy, precisely as you feared,
\nIt\u2019s true you had your time,
\nBut as samples, your\u2019s is mine,
\nThe young are running in the wood,
\nArm and arm, as they should,
\nThat measure gave no pleasure,
\nAnd with rhyme we divine,
\nThe inkwell has run dry,
\nDance along with your lyre.<\/p>\n

Why endeavour to fix what is beyond repair?
\nThe dancer knows it, but does not despair.
\nSuch concepts as justice permit, the mighty to inflict,
\nPain and suffering, so desist, with your rule of the fist!<\/p>\n

Virtue hardly nurtures,
\nSuch beauty as you speak.
\nWe must dance Now,
\nNot ask ourselves How.
\nNature is our calling,
\nAll cities are appalling;
\nLet us grow our hair,
\nTo show we don\u2019t care,
\nFor our time on earth is short,
\nLet us shed blood as we ought,
\nLaugh, love and lustre,
\nNot your cerebral bluster,
\nIntuition is my mission, and tradition,
\nI have no time for your addition;
\nI trust in the Earth,
\nAnd embrace the dirt.<\/p>\n

Apollo\u2019s Song<\/b><\/p>\n

I now appeal to all who wish to learn,
\nThe crafts which make of life a pleasurable span,
\nOr seek refuge from the beasts of prey,
\nIn glistening cities of men who sing my name,
\nAnd communicate in tongues glorious refrain,
\nAs without laws to curb the passion\u2019s rule,
\nTheir lives are spent in dreadful misery;
\nInstead I pray they last the course and take,
\nSuch lessons only I may give as these.<\/p>\n

Oh Pan you fool your passions rule your wits;
\nThe muck of earth becomes a curse to those,
\nWho call civilisation their home.
\nTo Pythagoras I brought my gift the lyre,
\nAnd from my precious instrument there came,
\nA lesson mathematical giving,
\nTo all who wished to build, precious insight;
\nEven the stars above obeyed my rule.<\/p>\n

And yet I shed these tears as well you see,
\nFor man is not a worthy pupil still,
\nHe lies and cheats and shapes belief to suit,
\nVainglorious aims, intrigues and stratagems;
\nHis wiles would make a god despair;
\nA time of expertise is passed indeed,
\nAnd shallow intellects run wild and mock,
\nThe light of knowledge that I handed down.<\/p>\n

And Pan you should recall the contest when,
\nOld Timulus adjudged my song above,
\nYour playful lute. Alone was Midas struck,
\nHe swooned with crass desire and came unstuck,
\nAnd grew a pair of ass\u2019s ears to show,
\nTo those who may assume your song superior,
\nA fate unkind for foolish thoughts as these;
\nTo all I urge be careful what you wish.<\/p>\n
