{"id":9866,"date":"2020-11-06T14:21:43","date_gmt":"2020-11-06T14:21:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cassandravoices.com\/?p=9866"},"modified":"2020-11-06T14:21:43","modified_gmt":"2020-11-06T14:21:43","slug":"poetry-kevin-higgins-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casswp.eutonom.eu\/index.php\/2020\/11\/06\/poetry-kevin-higgins-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetry &#8211; Kevin Higgins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Tribute Acts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each witch hunt is a tribute act to the last.<br \/>\nThere is always a committee of three.<br \/>\nThe gravity in the room is such<br \/>\nthey struggle to manoeuvre<br \/>\nthe enormity of their serious<br \/>\nfaces in the door.<\/p>\n<p>Except in the TV version,<br \/>\nthere is hardly ever a microphone.<br \/>\nThough they will usually give you<br \/>\na glass of water and, if you ask,<br \/>\ntea in a slightly chipped cup.<\/p>\n<p>The better quality of witch hunt<br \/>\nwill provide you with a plate<br \/>\nof sandwiches which, these days,<br \/>\nwould likely include<br \/>\ncoeliac and vegan options.<\/p>\n<p>One member of the panel interviewing you<br \/>\nis always a man with a shaky voice<br \/>\nwho obviously doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s doing.<br \/>\nHis wife thinks he\u2019s at the garden centre.<\/p>\n<p>Another is a woman trying<br \/>\non a posh accent for size<br \/>\nwho looks like she\u2019s dreaming<br \/>\nof killing you<br \/>\nin some way that would give her<br \/>\nspecial pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>It is written,<br \/>\nsomewhere deeper than law,<br \/>\nthat no such committee<br \/>\nshall ever be constituted<br \/>\nunless it contains<br \/>\nat least one ex-hippy.<\/p>\n<p>There is always the moment<br \/>\nwhen a pile of typed pages emerge<br \/>\nfrom an already opened envelope,<br \/>\nand one of them asks you:<br \/>\n<em>how, then, do you explain this<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>And the three of them sit there,<br \/>\npretending it\u2019s a real question.<\/p>\n<p>And you realise this committee is history<br \/>\npaying you the huge compliment<br \/>\nof making you (and people like you)<br \/>\nthe only item on the agenda;<\/p>\n<p>that in asking you about what you said,<br \/>\ndid, or typed on the mentioned dates,<br \/>\nthey reveal themselves<br \/>\nlike the black tree at the bottom of the garden<br \/>\nthat only shows its true self in winter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tribute Acts Each witch hunt is a tribute act to the last.
